Questions
Questions people ask first
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel a brief pinch, a dull ache or warmth at some points, and many feel very little. The needles are thin and single-use. Tell your acupuncturist if anything is uncomfortable and they adjust.
Are the needles clean?
Yes. Needles are sterile, used once and discarded in a sealed container. Your acupuncturist cleans the skin first and washes their hands before each visit.
How many visits will I need?
Your acupuncturist suggests a plan at the first visit, usually a short series that you review together. It is a plan, not a promise, and you can stop at any time.
Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Many PPO plans include an acupuncture benefit and plans differ. We check yours before your first visit. The how fees work page explains estimates and receipts.
Can I use my HSA or FSA?
Many health savings and flexible spending accounts cover care here. Ask your plan administrator before you book.
What should I wear and eat?
Wear loose, comfortable clothes and eat a light meal an hour or two before. Your provider drapes you for the care.
What happens at a first visit?
A conversation about your health and medicines, an explanation of the risks, the care itself and a short plan. The first visit page goes through it step by step.
Is acupuncture all right during pregnancy?
Some points are avoided in pregnancy, and some people choose to wait. Tell your acupuncturist if you are or might be pregnant, and check with your doctor too.
Will I have to stop my medicine?
No. Please bring us a list of everything you take, and keep taking your medicines unless your prescriber tells you otherwise.
What does acupuncture not help, and when should I see a doctor instead?
It does not replace your doctor's care. For chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or a high fever, call 911. For anything new or getting worse, see your doctor first.
