Moxibustion
Moxibustion uses dried mugwort leaf, rolled into a stick or cone, to bring gentle warmth near the skin. It is held at a distance and never touches the skin.
Your acupuncturist may add it to an acupuncture visit, or use a heat lamp for people who prefer to avoid smoke. The room is ventilated, and you can ask for a smokeless option.

What to expect
Moxibustion here, in plain terms
Who usually comes
Adults who like warmth and want something slow. People who feel cold in the hips or low back often ask about it.
What a visit is like
A short, quiet addition to a visit.
Your acupuncturist asks about smoke, heat and skin sensitivity first
The warm stick is held a few inches from the skin for a few minutes
You say when it feels warm enough
A heat lamp is an option if you would rather avoid smoke
What you may feel afterward
Warmth and a mild herbal smell on your clothes. The skin can look a little pink for a short time. If you feel light-headed, tell your acupuncturist and sit up slowly.
Tell us first
Please tell your acupuncturist before the visit begins about any of these.
Asthma or sensitivity to smoke
Numb skin or reduced feeling in the area
Pregnancy, or a chance you are pregnant
A fever or a skin infection
Everything you take, including supplements
How many visits people plan for
It is usually added to a few visits rather than booked alone. Your acupuncturist suggests a plan with you, and nothing is promised.
What it does not do, and when to see a doctor
Moxibustion does not replace your doctor's care. See your doctor first for a new lump, a fever or any pain that is getting worse, and call 911 for chest pain or trouble breathing.
Questions about moxibustion
Is there smoke?
Traditional moxa makes light smoke. Our rooms are ventilated, and a smokeless stick or a heat lamp is available if you prefer.
Will it burn me?
It should only feel warm. The stick is held at a distance, and you tell your acupuncturist the moment it feels like too much.
What is mugwort?
A common garden herb. The dried leaf is rolled into sticks or cones for moxibustion, and it is used only on the outside of the body.
